The Long Nguyen and Kimmy Duong Scholarship Program

To qualify for The Long Nguyen and Kimmy Duong Scholarship Programs applicants must live in Washington, DC, Virginia, and Maryland, applicant’s must be US citizens or US Permanent Residents (except for the 3 gold scholarships reserved for Vietnamese students from Vietnam) and must enroll in the University of Maryland, George Mason University, Virginia Polytechnic Institute, University of Virginia, Northern Virginia Community College, Montgomery College, and Virginia Commonwealth University.

Scholarship recipients receive both a financial award and an opportunity to engage in job training with working professionals in their field of study. To accomplish the latter, each recipient should attend quarterly meetings with a professional mentor in the Washington DC area.

To accept the scholarships, applicants must be at the award ceremony and also attend our semi-annual mandatory meetings.

Additional qualifications are:

1. Vietnamese heritage (for Vietnamese applications)
2. Age 17-30
3. Outstanding academic achievement (for example, GPA of 3.0 or above)
4. Strong leadership potential
5. Demonstrated active service to the Vietnamese, and/or American communities
6. Strong knowledge of your heritage (Vietnamese, American, and Others)
7. Strong desire to support for a better world
8. Passion to protect the values of freedom, democracy, and human rights world-wide
9. In need of financial aid

Additional Requirements for Vietnamese students from Vietnam:

1. Provide current family financial situation
2. Students may NOT be from a Vietnamese Government Official family and/or NOT from a Vietnamese Communist Party family

Special consideration will be given to students with unique situations, for example:

-low to moderate incomes
-single parents returning to school to improve their families’ lives, or
-students who are trying to recover from a past criminal record and improve their own lives.

To prepare for submitting, you should first:

For Returning Recipients:

  1. Obtain an official transcript of your current academic work from your current and past academic institutions in PDF form.
  2. Write a 1-2 page essay in PDF form that describes your Vietnamese/American/Others heritage and how it has shaped you into the person you are today. Please include your experience in community service activities. Also, comment on any hardships that you have overcome to pursue higher education.
  3. Provide your current financial situation and the reasons why you need financial aid.

For New Applicants:

  1. Write a 1-2 page resume summarizing your academic and personal achievements (as a PDF file).
  2. Obtain an official transcript of your current academic work from your current and past academic institutions in PDF form.
  3. Write a 1-2 page essay in PDF form that describes your Vietnamese/American/Others heritage and how it has shaped you into the person you are today. Please include your experience in community service activities. Also, comment on any hardships that you have overcome to pursue higher education.
  4. Contact 3 individuals who would be able to prepare 1-page letters of recommendation in PDF form. These individuals should identify their relationship to you and comment about your leadership skills and your character. Each letter should identify the name, title, and institution of the person writing the letter. They also can email their recommendation letter to thekimmyduongfoundation@gmail.com with “your full name and your full home address”. That should be the same as your application/resume.
  5. Provide your current financial situation and the reasons why you need financial aid.

After you have collected all the items above, please fill out and submit the forms. You will receive an email acknowledgment after your submission is complete.
